Rod McIntosh
Gestural mixed media ink paintings.
BIOGRAPHY
Rod McIntosh is inspired by archeology, mythology, Zen and the way paint becomes ingrained in the material and history of an object. His work encapsulates a Zen process of repetition as each stroke is rehearsed a dozen times before being applied to the surface, the finished work becoming a record of this performance.
Rod produces works in 3 mediums. His Vessel series are made of fine layers of gesso built up patiently over days, then painted after many gesture studies with Indian ink. Finally the work is glazed with soured milk and seeled with bees wax, a technique of master sculptors for finishing plaster.
His Mindful series are rehearased strokes painted on glass which rice paper is then laid over to take an imprint of the image. He then applies layers of rice starch glue and charcoal powder and finally mounts the paper onto Fabriano.
His circular Tondo series are built up using layers of mulberry paper, ink, charcoal and gesso mounted onto fabriano paper and board. He then finishes the piece with a copper leaf edge and high quality resin glaze.
